Open Question: Need suggestions for cleaning my fish tank. How do i choose the right filter in this case?

Need help on choosing the right filter.. I have this tiny outdoor fish tank at home which can hold 180 litres of water. There is an ornament in the middle of the fish tank which holds water up there and spills down when it overflows.(Done by aerator sucking water up). Recently green algaes have been growing on my ornament and causing my water to be dirty. I thought that it was due to my lack of filter and i tried making my possess filter out of a container. The container will help in some ways to clear the algae by making the water go through many tiny stones. It worked initially but lately i have been getting fed-up when water can't pass through the filter due to algaes clogging the gaps of the tiny stones. Worse still, the filter itself has been the breeding ground for the algaes that are supposedly trap inside every the rock. I am thinking of removing the ornament after i did some research showing that phosphate on the ornament might be the cause of algaes growing. The algae i am referring to is not the normal, dark green type. It is a bright green slimy and disgusting and it grows very quick. Should I change my D.I.Y filter to a commercial external canister filter one? Is external filter suitable for outdoor use? Because my fish tank will be exposed to heavy rains and sun.

Open Question: Are peppers the culprit in my fridge?

The past week or so I have had an unpleasant odor coming from my fridge. It doesn't odor like fresh bell peppers (I have a few whole ones, still fresh, and one clip and in a Ziploc sandwich bag). But the odor is not like anything else. It's not strong or horrible or fishy or like bad meat or anything. A few days ago, I removed absolutely everything from my fridge, checking to look if anything was bad, and wiped every the shelves. Today, still the same odor. There is nothing unusual in there. No fish, only meat I bought yesterday. No leftovers that have any strong smells, none that have been in there over a day. I have lots of vegetables and fruit, every fresh, and the few things that are clip and stored are a lemon, one pepper, and I think that's it. 1. What could the odor be? Have you ever had peppers cause odd smells in your fridge? (Again, the odor is not of fresh peppers. I know they have a strong odor. It is a different odor.) 2. What can I do about it? If you don't think it's the peppers, what can I do? I've already cleaned the fridge. I have a brand new baking soda fridge box in there (not really helping). What else? Brent, I have no idea what your answer says. Could you say please say that in English?

Open Question: Should I approach my sister or cast it all away?

Ugh! Sorry for the length. Skip down to the ** if you don't want to read the whole thing. I had gotten used to it just being my dad and I here, which was actually quite nice, considering our family history, but now, well, my sister and her boyfriend moved in. The home (five bedrooms) has plenty of space, and it's almost nice to have her around, sometimes - I guess, but she's getting on my last nerve and I don't know how to approach the situation without her taking offense. The little things I've been able to just push aside, like her coming into the kitchen and re-arranging everything in the cupboards. They were already organized nicely, she just thought her way was, "better." I squeezed out a nod and just left the situation. That sort of thing continued with the dining room furniture, the kitchen table placement, and she took my spot in the driveway. every of this annoys me, but I'm not too concerned about them, they are just what started it. I was worried about the amount of animals she was bringing, two lizards (big ones!), two dogs, a few birds, a ferret, and fish. Other than most of them smelling like sh;t, I have a cat and her 8 week old kittens. They stay in my bedroom and bath for now, but her dog, Tasha, chased my other cat, Tommy, every around the home. Wait until my kittens are ready to explore our home, that's going to be stressful. Sigh. ********** Her pets were enough to take on, now the real animals are the people her boyfriend, Tim, brings around. They are gross and rude, and they make a mess in the kitchen and are too lazy to clean up. They are noisy, even after I ask them to please keep it silent, especially at night. I've complained to my dad, but he's just as cautious when approaching my sister. Jen has always gotten what she's wanted, spoiled brat, and I guess I'm guilty of spoiling her, even though she's a couple years older, weird. Well, his friends are her friends, so telling her that they need to calm down or not arrive here at every, will cause tension between us, which I don't need. How can I tell her my feelings about his friends, without them taking offense? Am I out of line? If I should just keep my mouth close, please say so. If you think I'm being a wimp, I agree.. Thanks.

Open Question: betta fish question????????

I have a betta that was purchased from petsmart, and it lives in a 2.5 gallon tank with a tiny heater. His tank stays between 78-82 degrees. Its got a filter, but I honestly dont like using it as it seems to blow him around a little bit. I change/partially change his water frequently. Its been about 3 months since I got him, and hes been acting weird today. He hides in his barrel ornament that I have in his tank, and he will swim around for a bit to receive air, but swim right back into his barrel. He NEVER goes into his barrel, he is always swimmin around and waving his body back and forth as if he is glad. Making bubble nests. But today hes weird and hardly will eat. What can I do? What signs should I look for, and how do I treat it? Can someone give me advice?

Open Question: What is a good beginner combo?

I'm pretty new to fishing. I've done it some over the years, but I want to start pursuing it fairly seriously. I'm trying to find a rod below $100. I'm going to be using it mainly off-shore at the lake. I will also use it occasionally at the river for catfish. I guess I'm mainly going for bass, cropie, and catfish. I want to be able to catch smaller stuff but still be able to land something big (like a 20 pound flathead) if it takes my bait. Anyway, what is a good combo for me to purchase? Also, what testline would you recommend with it? Any other tips would be great as well. Thanks!

Open Question: why does my dog stink?

Ok, I have a 7 month old Pit Bull, poodle, Eskimo mix and he has skin allergies (from flee bites) and he never really stank before we started giving him Fish Oil pills. I don't know if it is the pills but even after we bath him, like an hour after he dries he still smells like feet. I know it sounds gross but he does. I adore my dog so much, and I adore to pet and play with him but when ever I touch him my hand stinks and I have to wash my hands. I am starting to not like to touch him and It kills me!! Is their anything I can do? I mean we bath him with shampoo that smells like baby powder but even that doesn't help. Is it the pills? and if so, what can we do about it, if anything? Another thing, Why does he still have like 1-2 fleas on him even after I give him a flea bath?!?! he has been flea free for about a month now, maybe a little longer and now he is starting to receive them again. Why can't we receive rid of them? We have even done the flea bombs!!! We have had him on the same food that we have had him on scene we first got him, so we know it's not his food.

Open Question: Should I wait for her or move on?

[This is very long, if you don't like to read, go to other questions] A good pal of mine and I like each other, but we decided to take things slow, develop more feelings before we decide to commit. It sounded every good, since we had no reason to rush. The problem happened when I found out how passive she was. I very well knew that she's a bit shy and introverted, but it wasn't too bad and I was certain she'd open her minds up soon enough. But no, she turned out to be the most passive person I've ever met. When we talk on AIM, she's never online. She always hides offline when she's actually online, and tells me I should try to talk to her because she may answer. I asked her why she has to hide offline, and she said she doesn't like to be bothered by some people when she doesn't wanna talk. My attempt to talk isn't always successful, of course. I try a couple times a day, and I'm lucky if we talk everyday. She isn't the most responsive person. Many times, she's talking to others, watching videos on YouTube, or other not usually very important things. Sometimes, a couple times a week, I send her messages, either via phone text or Facebook, nice of like my diary just for her. How my day was, how I was thinking of her, asking how her day was, etc., especially when we didn't receive to talk lately. With no exaggerations, she responds about one per 10 messages. Lately, her attitude has been "meh" and when I ask her if everything is okay, she just says it's because of the work. I realized that I never hear from her unless I talk to her first. So I decided not to initiate the conversation for two weeks, while keeping myself regularly available to talk. Guess what, she didn't talk to me at every, for two full weeks. It gets me frustrated. I don't mind leading the girl, but I still want the girl to put in efforts, and the way things look to me at the moment, she's not even putting in half the effort I put in. I talked to her about this a couple times. She said she still likes me very much and that she's sorry for frustrating me. I told her, "there is a fine line between apathy and blunt passiveness, and I'm quite sure you've crossed the line long time ago." She reminded me that we were suppose to take it slow. It's been over two months since we agreed that we'll "take it slow", and she's gotten much more introverted since then. This is a unhappy thing, because everything else about her, she's absolutely fantastic. Classic girl next door, great grin, sweetest heart, and even a bit of nerdy side. Everything I could ask for in a girl, she has it, except for her aloof attitude, which I really can't deal with. I thought it's not a big deal, and I really tried to be patient and work it out for past two months, but when I'm starting to feel like I've been wasting my time, I know it's time to reconsider my feelings for her. Should I wait for her or move on? FYI - I'm 21 and she's 18. 1) Wait. Don't be a jerk now. She may be testing you. If only one aspect of her is bothering you, then you need to keep try. Be impatient, and you may regret later. 2) Move on. She's not worth the headache. If she's naturally passive like that, chances are, she'll always be like that. And if it troubles you this much, just stay friends with this girl, there are plenty of fish in the sea.

Open Question: Do you pride your self by admitting your weakness?

I work in a pet store and I have a lot of knowledge in most of the categories. Occasionally I am ushered into the fish/reptiles section where not only am I weak, I suspect I'm a disgrace because I should have retained more of the info than I have. I can't help it, I don't have the affinity for these creatures like I do the others. People constantly ask me questions that I'm uncomfortable w/ ... I may know enough to 'wing' my way through it but my conscience won't allow me to respond w/ conviction so I politely tell the customer I don't know while seek associates that do. Maurice- What book can I read that will educate me on my weaknesses? I've already been exposed to the info ... my problem is that I struggle to retain it.

Open Question: How do I introduce new fish into my Betta's tank?

And before anyone says anything - you cannot keep male bettas together. That's true. You CAN keep a betta with other docile fish that don't have long or flowy fins. I know from research and experience. I had a betta in a community tank with guppies, mollies and some tetra when I was younger and they lived for a very long time, years for the Betta. The guppies were the only ones that didn't make it. They only lasted a couple weeks. I'm thinking of getting a couple cherry barbs, some neon tetras and a corydoras catfish. I just got Bob (our Betta) a new 10-gallon tank, so I can only add a couple of fish. I just want to know what the easiest way to introduce them into his tank is that will create the least amount of stress for every the fish, especially Bob. We've had him for about six months now, but he originally belonged to my husband's little sister and mom who didn't take care of him at every. He got fin rot, was practically white every the time and would have died if we hadn't taken him. Now, his fins are mostly grown back and he has beautiful colors! :) I just want to make sure we keep him as healthy as possible. It would be stupid to undo every of our difficult work. Thanks so much! I have decided to receive two Corydoras Catfish and EITHER six Cherry Barbs OR six Neon Tetras. Our tank is only ten gallons, so I don't think there's enough space for two catfish and six barbs and six tetras. So I'm just doing one or the other. I have until Wednesday when hubby gets his paycheck to decide. Any recommendations on which one, Cherry Barb or Neon Tetra, to receive? Thanks! Thank you, baymast13. I know about the dangers of them nipping at his fins. Everything that I've read, though, has said Cherry Barbs and Neon Tetras, specifically, not just any Barbs or Tetras are usually okay with Bettas. I only included the first section to stave off the "Bettas kill everything" answers. I was looking for informative answers like yours and TimoG's :) The other info is good to know! And we did cycle the tank, but not for weeks. Just a couple days. Oops :/ Thanks!!

Open Question: does Kroger sell single kernels of corn?

Hey Yahoo answers people, I have a question that I know you will help me with. I don't need a whole can of corn because I will toss away every the other kernels I just need six maybe seven kernels at the most. Are there any grocery stores in Kentucky that sell this for me? Also how many kernels of corn arrive in a can and will the leftovers still be eaten by carp fish even if I don't go fishing until April and should I store the leftovers in my fridge or freezer? I know I ask a lot of questions for this but I want to make sure I have every sides of a plan covered so that I won't worry and just like my carp fishing trip. Open Question: How big should my fish tank be for two fancy goldfish?

Hey I have been planning to receive a tiny calico Ryukin goldfish and a tiny calico Shubunkin goldfish. i did every my research on both of the fish for quite a while now and i think im ready to to buy them at the store. I found out that the more room you give them the larger the fish will grow to be and that's why i wanted something tiny to keep there tiny size. From what i learned both fish need 20+ gallons of water for proper care but my spending limit is low and room I don't have. So do you think maybe a tank about 3 gallons with suite them well? Now don't giggle if im totally wrong lol i just wanted to here from someone who had experience with the both of those two gold fish in a smaller tank about 3 gallons. This is about the size of tank i want to receive: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752369 Do you think its suitable just for the two fish a want and if not what size do you think is better?
